Still a newbie... Slow to post...

Well, I don't want to stick with this "newbie" theme to many nights in a row, but I'm still going to take a "Kings X" tonight, where related to posting anything substantial.

Suffice to say, I've spent the last several days making significant strides on the content of my personal website. If you haven't visited it before, feel free to take a peek. http://www.michaelhulme.com/ .

The "Portfolio" section is probably the area I have spent the most time organizing. However there are some intriguing areas like the "POT "S" or POT "P"" page; and the "TED" page. Or if you are just looking for a little distraction, visit the "Movie Time" page.

Intro, The Michael Hulme Project - "Hello world!"

I know the blog title "The Michael Hulme Project", leads one to believe there is going to be some discussion here about some; formal, possibly impressive, undergoing, "project" or event; but the truth of the matter is, I have no formal plans for this blog or its real "purpose" at the moment. And honestly, the Blog URL "Michael Hulme", was already taken! ...what can one do?

Fact is. as of this month there are times when it feels the "Michael Hulme Project" is merely the task of getting older! I turned 40 this month! Ugg - who can feel to excited about that milestone? That's kind of a big one! One inspiring relative (uncle) of mine who hit 50 last month, tell me "50 was the new 35", so I'm not sure what official hope that can give me as far as an age conversion, but I need to get creative.

I have definitely hit certain ages with a bit more grace, and a bit less reflection on the passage of time and where life has come from and where it is going. But I think I will indeed survive this transition into my fourth decade. Would be kind of nice if the latest consensus were "40 is the new 25." 25! Now those were the days. Well, let's see - if memory serves perhaps those were just, "the younger days."

I guess the fact is I made of fraction of the income I deem appropriate these days. I was much less mature in so many ways, and I'm not sure I even considered the passage of time. And weather such consideration are spun positively or negatively, you have to agree considering the passage of time; or should I say, considering ones legacy which will be left to this world, is always a good thing.

Well, there is plenty more time to add plenty more thoughts - I'm going to end this (first / opening / premier) blog entry of mine here and now... Until later...

Let’s put the SUPER back into our POWER…

(I originally wrote this on 1/13/2008, but did not post blog entries at the time.)

What will History ultimately report about our “New World’s” fate? What History, What Legacy will the United States leave for the 22nd and 23rd century to ponder and discuss?

The “Dark Ages”, the “Renascence”, our Settlers, the “Frontier days”, the “Industrial Revolution”, the “Industrialized Military Complex”,

Let’s not forget the decline of the Romans, the disappearance of the Aztecs, the political and social disasters of the 20th century Germans. Let’s not rashly exhibit our influence in the world as the British of the 19th century did. Let’s not reduce this country and our history into yet another historic Super Powers decline. And let’s certainly agree that arrogance and naive optimism have certainly done little to advance any society.

Time to show the world how a Super Power’s (even if we are now the only one left; how we…) create; endless, renewable power; responsible world leadership; united front’s; expanding global economics; and the use of our own natural and intellectual resources that impresses even the most notable.

Time to reinvigorate our ingenuity our true leadership. History has repeatedly proven cultures thrive and grow, and more importantly survive, when they create and possess the best ideas and tools.

History has also demonstrated what happens to a society when it bloats with arrogance, gets lazy in its role of innovation, or relinquishes the power of its innovation to the bureaucracy of the leadership. While we will hopefully avoid future forms of Autocracy; in what way will we still prostitute our actual long term opportunities and responsibilities as a “Super Power” for the sake of an easier life today?

Let’s show the world how a wealthy country commutes and live on pennies a day in energy consumption. A true case of the rich countries getting richer; rather than the rich individuals just consuming more than their share; polluting more than their share; and uselessly wasting our hard earned personal resources on inefficiency rather than proficiency and worthwhile rewards.

Let’s make sure the “Power” in “Super Power” is renewable, and independent.
Why is energy Independence a true test and rite of passage for any true Super Power?
Anything less requires we pick and choose our allies based on their own countries natural resources versus that countries responsible way of approaching human rights, democracy and true capitalism. Much less are we honoring a country based on their own ingenuity or showing favoritism based on their citizens educations, intellectual resources and resulting improved and standard of living for their entire country.

Instead are lack of ethical discernment is causing unimaginable separations in classes within those oil rich countries we currently depend on. Resulting in unimaginable damage to the balances of world powers by elevating those oil rich countries we have willingly become dependent on.

How does a Super Power Currently fly?
  • A typical 2500 mile (Coast to Coast) flights disburses 2.5 Tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) per passenger, as much CO2 a typical car owner puts in the air every three months.
  • Where is Boeing based? U.S.A.
  • Where is Pratt & Whitney Based? U.S.A.

How does a Super Power drive to work?

  • 94% of the fuel used in our cars never reaches the tires!
  • Only .3% of the fuel is used to move the passengers weight from point A to Point B.
  • That is a 99.7% inefficient approach to transportation; after 100 years of Automobile production this is an embarrassment.

Lets lead yet another revolution
Industrial Revolution
Where is Ford based? U.S.A.
Computer Revolution
Where was Sinclair & Babbage from? U.S.A.
Green Revolution?

What criteria must be met by any truly viable future SUPER, POWER SOURCE and our adopted and preached “Green” Philosophy?

Innovating requires sensible leadership and common sense “processes of elimination”. Lets’ not waste any more time on solutions that simply don’t survive even the most limited version of common sense.

Aggregated Internet Design

(An odd idea I had one night about a new way to design and order custom computer systems.)

AiD - Aggregated Internet Design (Computer / Homes / Products / Etc…)
Or (another option) – Internet Based Evolutionary Design, (a.k.a.) iBED

Information
Aggregated Blogs / RSS / News Feed
Visualized
Derived virtual computer system configuration and designing based on all available information
& Transformed
Into state-of-the art real world products - within 30 days of component package fulfillment & release
=
A liberation of anticipation
High anticipation becomes actual satisfaction within 30 days of technology release!
Priced for ownership not for delays

Inspiration:
Customers who desire the best possible technology along with the highest level of quality control.
Customers who understand how to utilize the NEXT level of technology even before it has arrived.
Customer who find either enjoyment or profit in exploiting the very best in technology.
We were frustrated shoppers ourselves who decided to stop waiting for the large fortune 500 companies to dictate when we could enjoy a state-of-the-art combination of just released off-the-shelf technologies. (commodities = compromise – before items are mass produced for typical consumer consumption, others can benefit for early adoption and utilization.)

Authenticity:
We acquire and test all assembly to assure proper power consumption, Heat generation, ventilation, noise generations. Guaranteed threshold for each quality control category are benchmarked and e-mailed to our customers for review prior to final payment and shipment; to eliminate any buyer’s remorse.

Reshape your system with Migration “Molds”:
Each AiD system release will come with a guaranteed Migration tier allowing for up to 5 future upgrades or what we call “Molds”. Each upgrade can be performed either in succession of the last or strictly independently; meaning the previous upgrades are not required.

All 5 “Mold” releases will include a “Full-Reshape” or a “Touch-Up” option. The “Full-Reshape” will likely provide you with an option to completely upgrade every key component of your machine. From the Processor & HDD, to the Video Card & Optical Drive. While the “Touch-Up” will more conservatively follow the easiest upgrade path, possibly only impacting the graphics card, and its required drivers.

Legacy Limitations:
Formal announcements will be sent out to each customer when legacy supports are to be terminated for any past AiD system. However, with any growing community of customers will come a growing knowledge database which will be archived and extended minute by minute through our online public forum.

Unique “Virtualization”:
Each of our systems have a full recover partition, but even more importantly than this each system is based on a “Virtual Machine” architecture. This unique OS installation method is done for two reasons. One it gives our unique customers the option of installing any additional operating systems they desire with ease. Two, it allow us to easily include to OS builds relevant to each Migration Mold, while the customer can opt to keep their old OS installation in tact until the new system migration is complete.

Categorically:
Desktops
THE BASE - Proven base system platforms, with absolutely cutting edge graphics.
(A gamers’ value purchase)
THE ART - state-of-the-art nearly within 60 days of reach
(Less than 30 days to component release / with one additional month to test / build / and ship)
THE FUTURE - Near future predictions - On the horizon. These are the systems many talk about but few will deliver. In most case these systems (or a very close derivative) will be within our inventory within 6 months time.
(While it is very fun to know what the future holds, just remember - “You can wait for the next 6 months for the rest of your life!”)
SCI-FI – These are designs and technologies we are utilizing our unique knowledge and experience to develop and coordinate with leading venders. Our own contribution to the future of computing.

Laptops
Sculpture – Our balancing act; the most perfect arrangement of Power and Portability. Sleek! Light! Fast!

“right to bear arms”? or right to ignor reality? and perhps join your very own subculture?

(This is a VERY rough draft of a smattering of thoughts related to gun control I never fully fleshed out and finalized. I'm sure full of typos and incomplete sentences and thoughts.)

What were our founding fathers hoping to encourage with our “right to bear arms”? Or should I say what were those responsible for the second amendment hoping for. Since the actual original deceleration of independence doesn’t cover this topic. Are they merely encouraging splinter groups, small interest groups, cultic gatherings, or how about simply small, harmless, well-meaning “subcultures of gun enthusiast”? That’s what the founding father wanted – a subculture of folks with a voice of the resounding voice of defending ones rights to boot.

Why is it significant that the supreme court recently chose to uphold a person’s right to bear arms when he chose to shoot two men seen burgling his neighbors home. Lucky for this man he chose to shoot these men on Texas soil, where a “Castle” law recently added providing even more licensing to those choosing to protect their home or the home of a neighbor who has asked for such protection. Until the supreme court’s recent ruling, it was fairly well understood that as the 2nd amendment reads:
The "right of the people peaceably to assemble" and "the right of the people to be secure in their homes" refers to individuals while "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" refers to the state.

What is currently the consensus of the American public about the overall issue of gun control?
A relative majority of U.S. adults - 49 percent – favor stricter gun control, with 20 percent wanting less strict gun control and 21 percent wanting no change. Since 1998,however, this has dropped significantly as ten years ago, 69 percent favored stricter gun control. (Copyright Business Wire 2008)

What is the current consensus where related specifically to hand guns?
By 54 percent to 18 percent a majority favors stricter laws relating to the control of hand guns and another 18 percent want no change. Again, a decade makes a larger difference as in 1998, a 76 percent to 19 percent majority favored stricter laws relating to the control of hand guns. (Copyright Business Wire 2008)

So it is a nice trendy response these days to consider an even greater defense of this “right”! To be a “trend setter” and flip flop over to the side or less gun control might even feel cool, or smart right now. Or at least that is position of 25% of the population over the last 10 years.

Who was it, Thomas Jefferson or Bingaman Franklin, that said something to the affect,
"Those who neither are willing to fight for or die for our freedom don’t deserve it…":
http://www.scribd.com/doc/6482/United-States-Constitution?ga_related_doc=1
http://www.libertylounge.net/forums/17-bill-rights.html )

So let’s place ourselves in the time of our founding fathers…
Prior to Nuclear armaments! Prior to any masive battleships! Prior to Simi or fully automatic weapons! Prior to smart bombs! Prior to 350,000,000 citizens. Prior to a world that more than doubles it population every generation. Prior to our (socialized) social service, such as local fire department in every neighborhood and a policy headquarters in every major town.

So we all except the trillions of dollars we spend on national defense but we don’t except the scale of economy as being our countries decision to all contribute to a national armament.

So our fear in this republic and argument for “the right” to bear is to able to protect ourselves not only from our fellow citizens but also from a potential tyrannous government

Here lies a bit of a problem, we’ve kind of already agreed to give the government trillions of dollars to produce weapons and capabilities no citizen or “assembly” of citizens good possibly defend against.

Folks who kid themselves acting as if the issue it to nobly defending one’s “right” to bear arms and therefore cause worth fighting for; are merely joining a subculture of folks who seem to be ignoring the big picture and our worldwide presence and role the 2nd amendment has really involved into regarding the role our country “the people” has boldly taken on around the world.

I also admit it doesn’t bode well to follow the logic, “Most citizens cannot be trusted so we need firearms laws because we can trust citizens to abide by them.” So what is the solution?

And how absolutely scary to be guilty of a very unpopular “assault on our 2nd Amendment rights”. After all how would you possibly protect yourself from our high-tech, over powered military, our government from entering your home and invading your life if you weren’t packing a hand gun.

What message did Katrina send to us? – (For generation X and beyond…)

(I originally wrote this on 9/3/2005, but did not post blog entries at the time.)

What message did Katrina send to us?
What compassion?
What opportunity?
What humility?
What maturity?
What are we learning together?

Compassion must extend beyond our comfortable neighborhoods…
We can’t just offer help or hope the tragedies occur at a comfortable distance. Is it easier to accept donating to a cause when it is half a world away? Somehow accepting that distant country need help doesn’t mean we acknowledge the continued demand or impact the tragedy might have on our lives. We maintain the control to stop helping and return to our luxurious lives when we wish. We aren’t just contributing to Sally Struthers’ charity feeding the poor in Ethiopia or a tsunamis ran sacked environment 6000 miles away - we are needed 6 hours / hundreds of miles away. We can’t allow our state lines become a relevant factor because they are not. We can’t allow our precious local economy become the concern because it is not. We cant allow the price per gallon to be the issue, because it is not. The issues is human suffering / people in desperate need.
We may even have to give up some of our comforts!

The opportunities are broad…
The opportunities for prayer, for giving, for assistance, for compassion are unlimited. We must learn that our lives don’t always spin the direction we chose – "CONTROL" is, or should not, always be ours to take or depend on. Weather it is a car accident, a health complication or a natural disaster we all circum at one point or another in our lives to limits and needs. We all must find ourselves dependant on doctors, family members, finical assistance, and support of all types at some point in our lives. To look at any situation of need in judgment of its legitimacy, in judgment of its deservedness, of its pure opportunity to serve is not good enough. We must simply contribute, we must simply care, we must simply reach out, we must simply look within.
We must sometimes make an opportunity to help people in need is the best opportunity our lives have

What humility do we lack?
Looking within ourselves to what our lives thus far have established in your own heart is important to regularly examine. Do we naturally look across the border, across the country at our neighbor and feel called to care? Do we naturally look at our neighbors in need and ask ourselves how we can help? Do we naturally look and a devastated population and immediately pray? Or do we first say how will this affect MY life? How will this impact OUR economy? Why did these people not find a better way to prepare? Why did they not have enough money to get away from the area they lived? Why do I have enough money to watch CNN, check my blackberry, read my e-mails, listen to my voicemails, receive call on my cell phone and they don’t?

Are our maturities inadequate?
We are often so blinded by our own successes, by our own educations, by our own birthright, by our own selfishness. We have allowed the blessing in our lives to create “comfort zones”, we have allowed surviving our own personal tragedies to teach us to distance ourselves from other potential harm, to avoid all types of persecution and risk. While working to avoid harm & devastation are admirable we should not allow this effort to impact our sensitive and compassion for those who find it their time to in harm’s way, and burden with lesser circumstance. They may have missed the boat away from their flooded live, unfortunately we seemed to have often missed the boat on Compassion, humility, and maturity.

Look beyond the way our own lives are impacted.
Don’t govern your generosity allow it to take you away from your comfort zone. Don’t govern your generosity and limit which portion of your lives you will allow to be affected. Our generosity should not be considered “ours” to CONTROL – give your control over to a better purpose than self. Give your control up for the sake of compassion… Give your control over to humility and a life spent sharing…

This crises here on our own soil required us working together not waste time ripping each other apart. This was the case with 9/11 as well…

Let’s not wait for the next natural or unnatural disaster to change the way we live and give.

The “start-up” stage of an Unban Simulation department can be a challenge. Here is how I "Exceeded Expectation"...

There were numerous challenges, unique efforts and innovations compulsory to the successful implementation a new service like Urban Simulation –vs.- management of traditional Engineering Service:

I was hired and tasked from the beginning with the following Objectives & Challenges:

Objectives for new Urban Simulation Group:

  1. Urban simulation should become routinely part of our everyday design process for the engineering and planning groups. Just as we deliver plans, we should deliver the simulation. This needs to be marketed as a package, not as the design plans plus extra money for the simulation. This will require staff training and equipment, both in Plano and Dallas. As a second phase, this would spread to other Texas offices.
  2. This group should be doing the highest end, most sophisticated work in the State of Texas
    a. Particularly seek out projects that allow us to deliver these kinds of projects
    b. Particularly seek out venues to display this talent
  3. This group should be doing the highest end, most sophisticated work in (Company-X)
    a. Billable assignments from around the firm should come to Texas
    b. We aren't interested in routinely doing marketing pieces outside of Texas
  4. This group should be integrated in all (Company-X) -Texas projects, and should have clients of their own. This group should be instrumental in obtaining new clients for (Company-X) -Texas. Some of these may be non-traditional clients
  5. Be aggressive in partnering with other (Company-X) -Texas groups to market services as part of a team to win
  6. This group must be profitable
    a. 4x4 performance
    b. Time on jobs for the technology group as a whole equal to 75% overall
    c. No lost earnings
    d. Investments in personnel and equipment commensurate with market opportunity

This “start-up” stage of the department creation included constant challenges and the need to efficiently and most often autonomously overcome the following list of hurdles.

Challanges & Hurdles Overcome in 1st 18 months:

  1. A unique level of Hiring & Training
    i. I hired & trained 17 new personnel unfamiliar with the industries we serve over a 6 months period of time.
ii. A large number of these new hires were positioned simultaneously; during a time when only two employees (including myself) within the firm were familiar with the required department procedures and industry cliental.
iii. • This limited the attention certain administrative and high level items received
  2. I performed what I call "Smoke and Mirrors sales" during my first 10 month of employment in order to generate our initial client interest and sales.During this time it is important to understand we had:
    i. No portfolio
ii. No existing power points or brochures
iii. No existing customer testimoniesNone the less – over $800,000 in orders were placed prior to our facility being built.
  3. Created and defined the new Product line \ Billable Services which would serve our clients for years to come from scratch.
  4. Designed the staffs Workflow and the supporting technological infrastructure:
    i. Established basic workflow principals of all software toolsets and production task
ii. Implemented sub-division techniques allowing unlimited size outdoor virtual environments
iii. Thought a quality control method within our Pre, Post, and publishing services.
  5. Provided Architecture & Design of the physical working environment / facility
  6. IT task included – Ordering of all necessary equipment and software and media
    i. 3D Workstations – specified the new “standard” for 3D modeling hardware
ii. Software – designated full workflow tools set for every department procedure
iii. Post Production equipment – Editing \ Decks \ Sounds system \ Etc…
iv. Server storage – High-speed Fiber Channeled SANs solution.
  7. File storage conventions – Sub divided SANs solution into manageable areas
    i. Backup system for 3.5 terabytes (triple the rest of the office) Soon to be 9+ terabytes
ii. Network systems – High capacity gigabit switched local topology
iii. Cabling – Designed DVI integration to multiple workstation and Editing Bay
iv. Video Presentation – Centralized presentation opportunities within the production studio
    v. In field Data collection hardware \ Cameras, etc
vi. Blank DVDs, cases, Printable CD-ROMs, etc
  8. Design industry specific reporting tools and labor projection calendars
    i. Revision tracking on digital output \ frame sequences
ii. Fast turn around of labor intensive projects with staff members new to the industry
  9. Established Department Policies
    i. 3D Modeling conventions
ii. File storage \ organization principals & naming conventions
    iii. Quality control standards
  10. For each of the projects we performed industry specific quality control critiques -> custom development -> workflow maintenance (The department is one of a kind)
    i. Final results of production are often based on ours or our new client’s subjective opinions
ii. Technology in this field progresses aggressively each year
iii. Training of new techniques and refining of workflow is a constant necessity
  11. On demand adjustments to the business dynamics with all new staff members and technology solutions new to the company require numerous course corrections:
    i. I.e. -> Sales successes would occur -> Business reporting (labor Projections) reveals large amount of future TOJ -> Department must increase, personnel, local storage -> technical capabilities -> Post-production must adjust to avoid bottlenecking final output schedule.
ii. Constant Hand-offs and pro-active decisions to prepare for successful project completion were necessary as we incubated and grew the group.

Additional accomplishments made during the start-up process not identified above:

  • Required to pro-actively provide countless operations / facilities / Architecture and construction - design, accountability and direction on items such as; Plenum Exhaust Problems, Tack Light Locations and specs, Ballast Changes for other lights, Acoustic Foam ordering and positioning, Emergency Exit Light locations, Door installations and designs, Electronic Access & Security concerns, A/V cabling design and installation challenges, Shelving and Mill work issues, Furnishing orders - file cabinets, tables, etc., partition wall design and specification, projector specification, plus office supplies, etc…
  • Maintained chargeability during the last 6 months of 78.2% for my fast expanding group. This was a daunting challenge at times given the previously described operational issues and the fact our department is a brand new service offering for the firm.
  • Negotiated a partnership arrangement with Google \ Keyhole which provides all current Google-Earth Enterprise solutions free of charge to (Company-X) (minus the hardware) and provides preferred pricing for all of our clients on the enterprise solution and profit sharing for the individual seat licenses.
  • Coauthored a Technology opportunities Program Grant with the City of Dallas - The Grant described ways to use the latest Internet based technologies along with Real-time Simulation & GIS in an innovative and efficient manner to further economic development and eliminate some of the risks in development. This technology Grant Application described numerous advanced ways to assist in prototype planning efforts for large urban areas.

Below is an excerpt of my Performance Review conducted two weeks prior to leaving the company, by my supervising Manager, (Employee-X), Technology Manager - Texas

Section IV – Management Assessment
These questions were considered by the "Technology Manager" upon receiving the completed section III (above) and mutually discussed at the employee-manager CPD meeting.

Career Development
A. Insights regarding skills and competencies that will help the employee attain career goals.
1. Considering this employee’s career goals what do you perceive to be the most important areas for this individual’s development?
a. Job/Technical Skills

Michael is the most experienced, simulation/visualization subject matter expert in the firm. His technical skills are more than adequate for his current position. (4000+ employees) He has developed management skills related to managing the operations of a growing business unit, communicating with management peers from other disciplines and upward communication of business strategies and vision.
b. Personal Attributes (communication skills, leadership skills, etc.)
Michael appears to have the ability to convince other Sim professionals to buy into his vision and join his team. He is also very passionate about his technical discipline and the future of the discipline within the firm. He needs to place more of a priority on communicating more frequently with his management peers from other disciplines in order to prioritize business objectives.
2. During the next 12 months, what activities can be introduced that will develop the employee’s abilities and competencies in these areas?
Michael needs to be included in more marketing initiatives for mega pursuits and the Texas business plan for 2006. We are working toward spinning Michael’s team into their own section in 2006 – this is an organizational move that I support. Michael also should be tasked with developing a marketing plan for his section for 2006. Michael has not had an opportunity to attend the (Company-X) PM and Marketing training. Express programs to need to be identified and followed up on as soon as possible.

Job Performance
B. Assessment of employee’s current job performance and achievement of past year’s smart goals.
1. Considering the employee’s assessment of their performance outlined in Section III and your observations, document the results attained for each goal listed on the past year’s CPD. Specify if these results meet, exceed or fall short of expectations.
Goal 1:
Michael’s primary goal was the development of the Urban Sim practice into a profitable, growing business unit in Texas. He Exceeded this goal.
Goal 2:

Goal 3:

2. What do you perceive to be the employee’s key contributions to department or office success during the past year? How do these accomplishments impact the office or department business plan?
As stated in my previous Goal 1 assessment, Michael’s primary contribution was the development of the Urban Sim group. Michael accomplished exactly what we expected when he was brought onboard to establish our 3D practice.

3. How might this individual further contribute to the organization’s success?
Michael’s next task will be to continue the development of the Urban Sim group from both an operations and technical standpoint. Retention of key staff and the continued development of junior staff will be key. Targeting new clients throughout Texas and the rest of the division will also be critical.
