Lack of Choices Are Often Unacceptable

A very good Facebook friend, recently posted the following status update:
"Count your blessings. We have a family friend diagnosed with jaw cancer. To prolong her life, they will need to remove her jaw, teeth and lymph glands. She will no longer be able to eat, drink or speak. She's choosing not to remove any of it. She's choosing quality over time. Life is better for all of us more than we think sometimes. Maybe take a moment and say a prayer for her."
...This is such sad news to me, and she will definitely be in my prayers.

Hate to get into any sort of stereotype of gender issue here, but it is only to admit a personal flaw:  Men so often have such a "bad habit" of wanting to "fix" a problem and/or quickly find a solution; versus, just listen to, and sympathize with, those who are simply explaining a situation. And I am one of the worst it seems at interjecting, "creative" thinking, and extensive research or personal insights into the mix.

More recently, but perhaps still not often enough, I have chosen to refrain from as many direct interjections as possible; and instead, continue to use my own personal blog (of often unpublished entries,) as a constructive outlet for my own points, counter points or typical insights.

In relation to my friends, "family friend's" condition; it immediately reminded me of a TV interview I just recently saw with Roger Ebert; whom had been battling with jaw cancer since 2002, until it's eventual removal. Personally, it made me so sad and frustrated to think how far our technology & science must progress for adequate treatment of those of us faced with such afflictions. It could so easily happen to any one of us; yet it seems it often takes the attention of a high-profile celebrity to help garner better research, support and funding.

Despite the fact, high-tech, Prosthetic Jaw Replacement procedures have been attempted since the 1960's (http://goo.gl/ky0UY), most are still considered extremely "experimental". You would think there would be numerous viable options by now. :-( I often think to myself, "we could send a man to the moon in the 1960's, but we can't ...(place frustration here)!" Half a century sure does seems like an awfully long time for medical science to take to advance something so prevalent and crucial to those patients faced with these challenges.

Some of the most hightech methods for prosthesis development and replacement, utilize "Rapid Prototyping"; which is also an advancing product design technology I have followed since it's more significant advancements in the late 80's. (http://goo.gl/LMYee) More specifically, such technology is often referred to as "STL, laser sintering"; and have become very common techniques for general product design and testing. But again, applications for advanced medical techniques involving STL are still very rare procedures (http://goo.gl/08Gkn); and would therefor require very proactive patient research or somewhat unconventional, forward thinking, advanced medical staffs in order to be administered or performed. And Despite many theories and techniques for prosthesis Jaw replacement being as old as 1938, it is still challenging to uncover the leading techniques and research centers offering solutions based on these most progressive techniques.  But I'll discuss more about why individual research of such topics is often a challenge toward the last half of this entry.

To see some of the most progressive applications of new, state-of-the-art, brilliant techniques now being applied to today's medicine you must look towards the field of "Regenerative Medicine" and how it is being applied towards organ replacement, suing "printing" technologies: http://www.ted.com/talks/anthony_atala_printing_a_human_kidney.html

I will certainly be praying for my friend's friend; in addition to her Doctors continued research and referral to the most knowledgeable U.S. specialist and technology available in this crucial area of medical science. There is little doubt, given the choices she has likely been offered thus far, that her current decision is the same most of us would choose as well.  And in so many cases of so much of the research and results which surface pertaining to U.S. based treatments, you will often see footnotes and disclaimers explaining "this is only in the early stages or development, actual testing and treatments are at least 5 years off."  Such disclaimers not only often feel like a restaurants hostess standard, I should have a table in 20 minutes (or on the busy weekend, 45 minutes) but it also cause for searching for what stages countries outside of the U.S. bureaucracy are up to. (http://translate.google.com/)

The biggest challenge in our information age is getting to the right information at the right time!  In fact this has become such an issue that folks are working daily to solve our "information overload" challenges with what has become a whole new ares of computational science and algorithmic theory and study in and of itself. PhD thesis are sighted regularly now through their published papers, eluding to a day when we might be able to actually makes since of all the information we now luxuriously have at out finger tips. http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2011/large-data-sets-algorithm-1216.html

There's certainly no shame in the fact that matching a persons need or a Doctors past education with the knowledge and expertise needed for our own, current and personal challenges or circumstances is an on going struggle for all of us.  The hope the Internet and our ever growing connectivity does offer, is that with a little bit of work, connecting these dots can sometimes happen in a very timely manor.  However, I would also argue, for most people, few internet searches prove to be as powerful as those serendipitous referrals and encouragements made perhaps in passing between two individuals in the midst of what might have started out as simple small talk.  Or perhaps even a hybrid of technology and chit chat available to us these days, via an unsuspecting Facebook status update. :-)

=== Skip ahead
I have however experienced my own testimony of how crucial patient research has become; following my own recent medical scare (in March of 2009) and being immediately admitted by my general physician to Baylor hospitals "state-of-the-art" cardiovascular unit in Dallas Texas for multiple blood clots in my right leg following my return from high-altitude snow shoeing and skiing. The only option made available to me following the centers extensive and state-of-the-art visualization of the veins and arteries within my right leg, was to go on blood thinners and lay on my back for 7-9 days as they helped control and perhaps dissolve the culprits.

The irony to this encouragement to me was the fact it was also explained that thee clots likely formed during my stagnant position I maintained on my return flight to Dallas in the days following my high-altitude adventure. So it sure seemed odd that a part of today's current methodology also involved asking a patient to just remain additionally stagnant for up to a weeks time. When I asked if it was more likely to development additional complications if I moved around, the answer was "no".

When I asked my attending physician, almost immediately after being admitted to a private room, if the reason I needed to remain here under supervision was due to the fact I was still in danger of the blood clot in my leg migrating, or perhaps my body forming new ones?  The answer was also "no, and no". She went on to explain, the regiment of Lovanox injections, now scheduled for daily administration, were therapeutically preventing any solid particles from potentially impacting my lungs or heart.

When asked if there was any reason, (given my own ability to administer the required injections,) that I should remain in the hospital?  I was told "no, not really."  Therefor, I said, "well then I wish to be checked out and allowed to go home immediately."

Given the fact I had only moments earlier been placed in a gown and taken up to my own private room, the doctor on duty within that floor of the hospital who was answering my questions, said, "we will see about letting you go in the morning." So after one night stay rather than 7-8, I was released.

What really became crucial about this decision to leave and not even stay through the weekend, was my ability to return to work the following Monday. It was a brief visit with a co-worker that would forever change my perspective on medical science, research and treatment within our current system of U.S. medicine.

You see my coworker, felt my symptoms and my story sounded very much like what a neighbor of her's son had recently endured.  So much so, that the next day she brought over to my desk the name of a Doctor who practiced no more than 4 miles away form the very hospital I was admitted to days earlier.  However this doctor worked within a completely different medical network.  I had visited Baylor medical, this Doctor was on staff within the U.T. / Southwestern medical center.  A completed unrelated and apparently unconnected system, despite the fact they were only blocks from one another within my home town.

Within days I under went a very new medical procedure to proactively dissolved the blood clots present within my right leg.  You see clots won't go away quickly, if at all.  the body just often learns to adapt and work around the now useless veins.  And even when clots are effectively eliminated through long term use of drugs or by just waiting for the body to heal, they leave behind irreplaceable scar tissue and typically permanently damaged valves, which hinder circulation and cause swelling in extremities.

The point is the sooner the clot is removed the less damage is caused.  So much so is this timing, that the procedure I under went is only available to a patient of the clot is less than 4 weeks old.

=== End of personal testimony

None of this is to say that a cure for any of our ailments is always right around the corner, or is being kept from us unless we proactively ask.  It is however simply offering one testimony of how asking about alternative procedures, and taking a portion of my own care into my own hands, can at times improve your treatment, challenges, and possibly quality of life during your recovery or healing.

I do think that as I bring this entry to a close, I will circle it back around to the effort, opportunity and technology of pro-active, web based (re)searching.  You must keep in mind that current methods of searching for the information, contacts and research your situation might be improved by, is definitely a bit of an art.  And in many cases as you use your own "typical" or currently understood methods of searching for results, you are primarily serving to create a "predictability" which may limit your success.  Many current debates are under way as to the effect the current search giants of our world are having on eliminating or reducing our chances of oh so important serendipitous discovery, referral or passed on piece of valuable info.  You can read about these challenges in articles such as the following:
http://janderson99.hubpages.com/hub/Does-Google-have-the-Right-to-Tell-us-What-we-Want-How-to-get-Unpersonalised

Or videos such as the TED speech help explain current the Filter Bubble of current "News Feed" and "Search Engine" curating each of our results, based on our own personal typical preferences. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzZzf6PoyC4
My advice when searching for something imperatives to your well being, but perhaps foreign to your won expertise and knowledge base, is to change your typical method of operation.  In other words, switch Search engines!  If you normally use Google, go use Yahoo; if your normally use Bing go use Google.  You probably wont fair as well if you switch from Yahoo to Bing, since Yahoo now uses Bings algorithm to generate its results.  The goal here to avoid being isolated into, as the speech above puts it, "a web of one."

The real power in attempting these searches, is when the human mind connects the dots which no computer algorithm has yet master.  this may come in the obvious effort of translation (http://translate.google.com/) No search engines are positioned yet to search across multiple cultures or languages.  No search result no to deviate from an initial topic while for the moment creating a new search branch based on member of a research lab, or new funding, or a visit you made to the library, or a conversation you had with a coworker, friend or relative which taught you a new related term of science.  Reading an article with such hidden information will send a human down multiple path of research; however, a search engine has no such luxury of creativity and deductive reasoning.

When information can be life changing or perhaps life saving it must not only be taken seriously, but the search for such information must be approached creatively and with a new, as yet undefined, set of resourcefulness and determination.  One mustn't garner or create false hope, but one must also understand the limits of any one persons or one medical offices limited amount of current expertise and information on any one topic.  This is a world which offers new possibilities, the whole of the 7 Billion minds on this planet are now connected in an ever more productive manor. I don't want to instill false hope, I simple want to encourage others to attempt to exploit the planets minds and expertise a little more effectively, before accepting the limitation of one person, one organization or one city, state or countries worth of knowledge.

The Irony of Conformity Amongst "Creatives"

I do often wonder if many Apple fan boys within the "creative" fields, have ever bothered to examine the irony of their own conformity?  ..."conformity" is not a very "creative" trait after all.

After-all, where related to technological tool-sets, "creatives" typically share in uniformly seeking the same monochromatic, minimalism, computing platform. (Mistaking, if you will, minimalism for high-tech.) An unfortunate misinterpretation; given Apple is a computing platform which draws those same professionals towards a set of tools which are actually so technically limiting; in either their offering as a PC, or robust computing platform. ...and let's not even try to approach the Apple's recent (2010) abandonment of its' X-serve enterprise line of computers. Indicating, even Apple concedes the shallow nature of it's platform and opportunities outside of consumer, versus professional customers.

In keeping with product lines, devoid of "professional" / mission critical, profit based, computing intentions; rumors are they will soon abandon their Mac Pro desktop computing line as well. Eliminating their only remaining; flexible, up-gradable, high-end system offering. This combined with the fact they have recently alienated themselves from Adobe; the only real application developer of professional / industry standard, Page Publishing (In Desgn) , Photo Editing (Photoshop), Web Authoring (Dream Weaver) and reliable video editing tools (Premier) their platform supports, (not even going to mention Flash) is just embarrassing and completely destructive for all those "Creatives" who continue to depend on them. (And my hat is off to all those fellow NLE's who have had experienced the nightmare of using both the previous "Pro" version, and the now downgraded Final Cut, over the years!) Not to mention the fact there has NEVER been an adequate "industry standard" application developer in the (CAD) Computer Aided Design field, (and very few within the field of Computer Animation tool-sets) which has ever wished to risk development resources on supporting the Macintosh product line. The only exception are typically those which already had a presence in the UNIX landscape so for a few years supporting a directly ported version for OSX.

Being a "creative", should never mean turning a blind eye to the most productive and liberating tool sets. But it is often hard to get a "creative" to turn their eyes of the obsessions they have already chosen to desirably gaze at! Passion! Can't live with it, can't live without it. In these cases, a plea or question should be asked. "Since when do "creatives" wish to be limited? ...or for that matter conformist?" Was never a goal of mine while steeped within the Computer Graphics, Design and Simulation field...

I can however appreciate the fact that many "creatives" are not necessarily striving to be "computer nerds"; therefor, seeking what may seem to be the "path of least resistance", to this end. And I might try to be sensitive to those who feel the safest route to avoid becoming technically adept; is to harbor a platform based on "closed architecture" and a highly restrictive ecosystems; since such limits might initially offer the desired solace or comfort.

It just seems that ultimately depending on appropriate provisions such as of self proclaimed, "Awesome", IT folks, (or perhaps, 3rd part, outside consultants,) in an inspired and productive effort to avoid stifling platform limitations, the perils of discontinued support and whole product lines, and the stagnation of "comfort zones" (aka paradigms); and instead support or introduce platforms and tools which actually provide the most depth, security and freedom. Such liberation and better values, should actually be the smartest long term route within any organization or studio. But as is always the case, folks just don't know, what they don't know.

Creativity and Intelligent within larger organization is already fraught with so many challenges; it is certainly not a good choice to have those individuals whom are "avoiding being computer nerds" to indeed have the final say, belief or influence on the computing platform they chose to find comfort in.

If creatives are thinking by avoiding the wiser choice 90% of all computer users see fit to depend on, they are avoiding being "typical" or conformist; I'm afraid by instead conforming to their other "creative" peers (or all of those visible within their immediate circles;) in this case, they have shot themselves in the foot.  This wouldn't be such an irony and challenge if it wasn't so likely to stifle future creativity.

Here are some odd perspective on a couple of emerging technologies I shared through a blog entry last December, that I have yet to see shake up the industry, as I hope they one day will: http://themichaelhulmeproject.blogspot.com/2010/12/onlive-came-clean-and-future-looks.html

Perhaps even CITRIX recent announcement today claiming, "it will make virtual desktops cheaper than real ones", is also a step in this direction of remote computing, based on platforms even the "creatives" among us can't be stifled by.

And some rather unrelated news of Apple' "green" efforts, which I am a fan of:

America Must Remain a Birth Place for Future Entrepreneurs!

I often warn folks to keep in mind, we are all either "part of the problem or part of the solution"...

Recently a FB "friend" posted the following sentiment:

"Find something better than you, and when you do, figure out how you can make that something even better. Stop asking/demanding for other people to live your life for you. You can reap what you sow, or you can cry about what other people reap and sow. If you can't own up to your own life, how can you ask others to pay for your failures. Life isn't fair, get off your entitled high-horses and make a difference. Stop empowering the government to think for you."

** While it all sounded rather inspiring at first, it unfortunately garnered the following typical remarks:

"...there are so many out there that ONLY WANT to live off of the government and off of the taxes we pay!!! I have a hard enough time supporting myself and my 3 kids, and to have to pay the taxes we do really sucks, knowing the part of that goes to a lazy ass that doesn't want to work. Especially when they just want to keep having kids, doing drugs, driving nicer cars then I do and I'm the one out there busting my ass for 10 to 15 hours a day!"

** In discussions such as this, I think it is best to first ask yourself, "are you a person guided by fear or opportunity?"

A true entrepreneurial individual / job creator, is never guided by fear. This is not to say they are not aware of pit falls, but paranoia and bazaar ideas of victimization are hardly the catalyst for American innovation!

It amazes me how "off point" anger can place a vast lump of the American public. While it may make for titillating, sensationalized, editorial, commentary, it does so little to actually effectively / productively motivate the American public.

We all loose as American citizens when well-meaning folks actually believe they are under seize and under attack. When was the last time you personally saw some "angry conservative" become a productive, job creating entrepreneur? ...you personally?

I desperately wish more "conservatives" would form opinions based on testimony rather than titillation. After all, "conservative thinking" is hardly the opportunity provided to those who truly know how to take advantage of our country's, free market, free enterprise and exceptional capitalistic nature. However, so many are being distracted by anger and fear, versus harnessing a productive passion towards the opportunities which would actually make a difference in this country's future and sustained viability as an economic world power and job creator.

While free speech is certainly one of the greatest freedoms we all have, it does little to create jobs when it is so poorly miss directed, time and time again. Don't confuse your opportunity and freedom to be angry and scared and expressive with that of being productive, patriotic and a part of the solution.

It is simply NOT a complicated thing to determine where your own taxes are really going. Simply do the research, don't let FOX or any other editorialized network or website throw you off point. Do the research necessary to truly form your own opinion, rather than using information of those simply wishing to sell advertisements.

First and foremost, depend on the actually sources of spending to determine where your money goes within the U.S. government. This is truly a democracy for the people and by the people, and these numbers are and always have been published and available. Use such information to become an educated voter. Then work to gain an understanding for why these HUGE swath of pie charts of spending require the money they do. Laziness, or the thievery of greed fostered by the poor, sick or needy is HARDLY the source of any exorbitant taxes any one in this discussion or any population of America should be directing it's anger at.

Our only hope is for America to remain the birth place of future entrepreneurs! Fear and misdirected anger is hardly the solution. Overcoming the brain dead nature of the modern voter, and the countless millions who would allow the likes of nightly staring contest directed at a TV in order to help them decide where these loyalties, passions and "facts" come from is one of the biggest threats to our fabric of opportunity in this country.

How to get several free iPads - Simple, don't sign an AT&T contract!

Perhaps I should have titled this article, “I just signed up with AT&T for a new iPhone 4 plan, so I lost $1,873.76 over the next two years!” However, I didn’t think that was as catchy.

I have previously written on the many advantages of avoiding at all cost cell phone contracts; and purchasing your own handsets or smart phones out-right or in full; rather than getting sucked in to a “subsidized plan”. However, let me this time put it in even more simple terms, by making a current market comparison to just two of the leading cell phone platforms and plans. (This information was current as of 2/2/2011)

As for how you get a free iPad along the way? It’s simple, with the money left over, from this “out-of-pocket comparison”, you should have more than enough left over to purchase a couple, of the latest, top-of-the-line iPads or any other exciting piece of consumer electronics you wish. As long as you don’t THROW THIS MONEY AWAY.

As mentioned I’m keeping this comparison simple, so I’ll itemize only two (2) out-of-pocket comparisons: In one case we will purchase a new Android phone, which we’ll use on Virgin Mobile’s pay-as-you-go / No-Contract, Sprint powered network. Our other choice will be to sign-up for the latest iPhone, using one of AT&T’s comparable, two year contracted, “subsidized” plans. (I will be create two scenarios with as close to the same performance and usage opportunities as possible. In both cases you could chose a less inclusive, cheaper set of options, for instant have a limited number of calling minutes.)

1st, lets total the Android purchase along with two years of service on Virgin Mobil:

LG Optimus “V”, is the new Android handset we will purchase.

Available for: $149 - free and clear of any contract obligation at select local Radio Shacks.

The month to month charge (No contract) for Virgin Mobiles Unlimited EVERYTHING, or “Beyond Talk” plan is: $60 - per month.
(“Tethering”, or sharing your data with another device while on the go, is natively built in to this version of Android, “2.2”)

You must pay the first month up front. So this will bring your total amount at time of purchase (No “Signing”, since there is no contract!) to:
$209.00 - This includes your first 30 days of Unlimted / “Beyond Talk” services. Therefor, the addition of $1380.00 for the 23 next months of $60 charges thereafter, will bring a two year total out of pocket to:
$1,589.00 - For a full 2 years of service. Of course at any time you were free to switch carriers with no penalty, and you owned the Android Smart Phone free and clear from day one.

2nd, lets now total the ever popular (well marketed) iPhone / AT&T avenue:

iPhone 4 16GB model will sell for $199 with your 2 year contract. The phone would normally sell for around $570.00, if bought outside of AT&T network, as an “UNlocked” phone. (iPhone 4, is unfortunately still a 3G device, despite the confusion for some given the “4” in the model name. Therefore the Android model above is also a 3G Android handset.)

Now let’s breakdown the comparable AT&T voice, text and data plan:
AT&T doesn't currently offer one price for UNlimited everything, so we will come as close as we can.

Unlimited Calling or “Nation Unlimited” plan, as AT&T refers to it, is:
$69.99 - per month, with a 2yr contract

Now you must add a data plan, since after all this is a “smart phone”, and the Apples to apples comparative AT&T plan to Virgins Unlimited, is known as their, “Data PRO, 2GB, for iPhone, with Tethering” - nothing cryptic about that mouthful of a plan title. It goes for:
$45.00 - per month, with a 2yr contract

Now the only thing still missing from AT&T’s offering is the beloved Texting. This “Messaging unlimited” plans go for:
$20.00 - per month, with a 2yr contract

So your total amount due at time of “Signing”, is eventually:
$334.99

However, you may opt to have the $135.99 in 1st month voice and data fees simple billed to you. Now you add together the additional $3,127.77 in charges for the remainder of your 24 month contract and you reach the grand total of:
$3,462.76 = full 2 years of service.

That is a difference of:
$1,873.76!!

Let’s make a concession here, if we must. And lets assume the iPhone 4 is a slightly better phone. It does after all retail without a contract for $570.00. So lets take that extra $371 which is subsidized by AT&T; since you were willing to commit to these terms for the next two years; and let's credit this amount towards the difference. $1,873.76 - $371.00 = $1,502.76

3rd, lets consider the cost of an iPad = $499.00 (Base model):
What do you know? You have now devised a plan to save enough money to purchase an iPad! ...Or an Android tablet - You make the choice! At least you will enjoy and get something in return for this leftover money; and won’t simply be throwing this money at AT&T for the sake of their enjoyment and profit margins.

You sure don’t want to EVER choose the 3G iPad version, that will simply mean more monthly money going to AT&T for an additional data plan. You are MUCH better off, simply “Tethering” your "Base Model" iPad to your iPhone of Android handset when on the road and using it’s existing data plan. Or just use its built in WiFi of course when at home, office, school, airport or the coffee shop.

But what to do with the left over $1,003.76 ?

How about a new laptop for the kids? Or Two or three (or even 4!) of the new iPod Touches for them to play around with, since they were probably the ones begging you to buy the new iPhone 4 in the first place so they could tinker with all the games and apps.

Or fine, How about a top of the line HDTV, pocket camcorder; since the LG Optimus “V”, Android device, doesn't shoot as high of quality videos. You’ll still have plenty of money left over, since few cameras these days, “Pro-sumer” or otherwise, top the $1,000 dollar price range.

Other HUGE Advantages of making this transition:
Being on the Android platform means NEVER having to hook your phone up to your computer, to back it up, or download apps, or sync songs, or restore your contacts. The iPhone was made as a “Companion device”, this is very out-dated thinking. The Android device was made to fully exploit “The Cloud”, a.k.a. the Internet, for all app purchases, data backups and downloads.

Apple intentionally limits it's users choices:
Being forced to depend solely on the “Apple Ecosystem” lends itself to all sort of limitation and frustrations for a consumer. For instance when choosing to buy your favorite song; and then finding out after purchasing it, you don’t have the freedom to move it or play it on other MP3 devices, except those made by Apple.

The same is true for all media purchased on any Apple device. So much for later moving your favorite iTunes movies or songs to a more reasonably priced MP3 or Video player or perhaps a centralized Home Media Server, which will also be gaining popularity as digital media continues to make its way to our living rooms on a variety of set-top playback devices, such as Game Consoles, Roku Netflix Devices, Blu-Ray player, and Smart TVs!

Android, due to the nature of it’s open platform, will continue to provide the most advanced, innovative and highest performing handsets and smart phones. So getting vested towards it’s learning curve and application store will be time well spent. And the Android Market Place has as robust of a selection of application as the Apple iPhone community enjoys. However a much larger percentage of the application for Android are offered at no charge.

Unlike Apple, Google keeps NONE of the proceeds from application sales! Depending strictly on residual advertising. Therefor, 90% of the profits from each sale go directly to the developer, with the remaining 10% offered to the Carrier hosting the phones data. This sales model will continue to healthily inspire the loyalty of Developers and the support of Carries well into the future.

On the flip side:
Apples model will only prove to be good on the short term for Apple share holders. As they keep 30% of each sales for themselves; and give the remaining 70% strictly to the developer. This "closed" ecosystem, and more limited 3rd party profit, is an approach which has NEVER served Apple well in the long term. Ultimately hindering their progress when their innovative history should have put them on top of their game. Instead their greed has always proven to stifle their opportunities in markets they should have remained dominant in. i.e. the Personal computer market.

Keep, and better utilize, your current cell phone number:

If you can see the beauty of saving $1,874 in just 24 months, then perhaps you can also see the crazy advantages of using your “Google Voice” phone number (or Porting your current cell phone number to Google Voice) And using it as your primary contact.

With the use of a free service known as “Google Voice”, and the integration of your new Android / Google Smart Phone, you can do all sort of advanced and useful things with just your phone number You never could before. These features also make switching to a new phone in the future Painless and Transparent to any caller.

With Google Voice, you may have your number forwarded to other numbers of your choice or dumped directly to voicemail, depending on the date and time and who's calling. Google Voice's own, Web-accessible voicemail, with its automatic (and sometimes unintentionally hilarious) transcription, makes even the iPhone's visual-voicemail feature look like a last-decade product

Side Note:
The Android community tends to gravitate towards exploiting the freedom of this platform by publishing all the simple steps needing to “Rooting” or hacking your device, so as to explore even more uses than the developers or manufacture of the devices ever intended. This allows many handsets to last years beyond their original intention, by continually updating them (If the manufacture doesn’t choose to do it first,) to the latest OS version and apps.

This does completely change the game!

I have been meaning to explain and comment on the ever growing popularity of Virtualization or Virtual Machines (VMs) for the last two years. A recently announced innovation in cloud computing, secretly under development over the last seven years by Onlive.com, was unveiled and explained in detail during this years Game Developers Conference.

Such an innovative method of capitalizing on centralized processing and remote systems administrations has never been more effectively presented, nor more capable of taking advantage of the Internet's advancing average bandwidth, than Onlive's example application. Admittedly this video is describing an "On Demand Gaming" service; however, it is further illustrating a new form of high-end cloud computing, featuring real-time high definition graphic results. Furthermore, it is an example of a centralized computing environment which will dramatically capitalized on the substantial advantages of virtualized computing.

The innovation and results demonstrated in the presentation video below, are far more reaching than initially described. Onlive's dependency on virtualization and this groundbreaking, progressive, example of cloud computing, are more than just a glimpse of the future. The presented synergy of "cloud computing" and virtualization are a blatant leap forward and a genuine view of technology which must be considered and soon adopted by any progressive technology dependent institution or company.

It is a natural bridge to soon apply this technology towards instantly delivering and executing advanced, graphic demanding, state-of-the-art CAD (Computer aided design) applications for use within any architect, engineer or city planner's design and review process. Alternatively providing such professional applications could yield a system capable of unlimited, cloud based, clustered GPU results; simulating photo-realistic, full-motion computer generated output in real-time for any design project under development and review.

This is an opportunity that will LEVEL the playing field for even the smallest of A&E service firms which could benefit from high-end technology normally beyond their budgetary considerations or daily requirements. Drastically reducing typical cost associated with a local IT staffing and large departments. No software upgrades to worry about, license codes to manage, sophisticated hardware purchases to upgrade each year, or equipment leases to exchange, renew or turn in every two years.

The game has truly changed! Now you know why AutoDesk is one of Onlive's venture capitol partners to Onlive's unique process! Not to mention the inspiration AutoDesk will have to prepare their game authoring tools to take advantage of this new model in Game distribution.

Virtualization has been a fast expanding, emerging technology for consumers over the last couple of years; one which best exploits and better utilizes all available computing resources within any company, educational institution or ISP. It promises the ability to dramatically capitalize (or amortize) the huge repetitive and often underutilized investment in CPUs and related software and technology. When properly implemented Virtual Machines can offer HUGE cost savings for the end user. Helping to avoiding the surmounting annual cost associated with built in obsolescence and continued maintenance.

Virtualiztion drastically reduces any concerns or efforts spent upgrading and maintaining systems as well as their application and base OSs. Additionally, the technology leverages far fewer attached, physical servers in order to accomplish far more task. Furthermore these advantages and efficiencies may be applied on a company wide basis; not just in the "server rooms", additionally serving as a foundation for each end user's workstation throughout the company.

Despite all of these advantages, IT departments are, as usual, slow to adopt and implement this exciting progression in computing, cost savings and efficiency. The bottom line is, the cost of implementing such VM environment pays for itself in the first year of operation or less. Hesitations in utilizing VM's is more likely due to the lack of understanding its implementation and inability to fully calculate the financial advantageous which are crucial barriers for any institution or company to solve prior to risking innovative thinking.

Let's take stock of our investments... No let's take cheep green stock!

When I first saw this interview it was the acreage yielding statistics that really struck me! When the described alternatives are compared to say, corn; the comparison is shameful.

  • Corn, yields a dismal 18 gallons of oil per acre per year! WOW - Truly pathetic!
  • Palm, yields 700-800 gallons per acre per year
  • Algae, 20,000 gallons per acre per year (in an open pond system!)
  • Additionally the "Vertigro" system, overcomes evaporation and obviously uses any acreage with extreme efficiency.
  • A ten thousand (10,000%) percent increase over corn! (And that is only useing an open pond system.) These sad comparisons aren't science fiction, they're a reality; one, which will hopefully have an impact on current, very poor ethanol production techniques!

Is it any wonder why corn based ethanol is so debated? The only winners are the farmers… And perhaps commodities traders. I thought the corn farmer's were already further protected with government subsidies as well? Perhaps that's only the milk & cheese producers. The point is, how many different ways do we need to waste resources before we invest in efficient, viable solutions for our country. Oops, I digress...

Well, the original goal of this particular blog entry was finding "cheep green stock", so please feel invited to look up VCTPF's latest trading value; for your chance to get an inexpensive piece of Valacent's (http://www.valcent.net/) “High Density Vertical Growth”, Vertigro system.

Another couple of picks I like which are actually in the Solar arena are unfortunately not yet IPO's. But I'm keeping my eyes and ears open. If your hear something please leave me a comment.

    Aggregated Internet Design

(An odd idea I had one night about a new way to design and order custom computer systems.)

    AiD - Aggregated Internet Design (Computer / Homes / Products / Etc…)
Or (another option) – Internet Based Evolutionary Design, (a.k.a.) iBED

    Information
Aggregated Blogs / RSS / News Feed
    Visualized
Derived virtual computer system configuration and designing based on all available information
    & Transformed
Into state-of-the art real world products - within 30 days of component package fulfillment & release

    A liberation of anticipation
High anticipation becomes actual satisfaction within 30 days of technology release!
Priced for ownership not for delays

    Inspiration:
Customers who desire the best possible technology along with the highest level of quality control.
Customers who understand how to utilize the NEXT level of technology even before it has arrived.
Customer who find either enjoyment or profit in exploiting the very best in technology.
We were frustrated shoppers ourselves who decided to stop waiting for the large fortune 500 companies to dictate when we could enjoy a state-of-the-art combination of just released off-the-shelf technologies. (commodities = compromise – before items are mass produced for typical consumer consumption, others can benefit for early adoption and utilization.)

    Authenticity:
We acquire and test all assembly to assure proper power consumption, Heat generation, ventilation, noise generations. Guaranteed threshold for each quality control category are benchmarked and e-mailed to our customers for review prior to final payment and shipment; to eliminate any buyer’s remorse.

Reshape your system with Migration “Molds”:
Each AiD system release will come with a guaranteed Migration tier allowing for up to 5 future upgrades or what we call “Molds”. Each upgrade can be performed either in succession of the last or strictly independently; meaning the previous upgrades are not required.

All 5 “Mold” releases will include a “Full-Reshape” or a “Touch-Up” option. The “Full-Reshape” will likely provide you with an option to completely upgrade every key component of your machine. From the Processor & HDD, to the Video Card & Optical Drive. While the “Touch-Up” will more conservatively follow the easiest upgrade path, possibly only impacting the graphics card, and its required drivers.

The “start-up” stage of an Unban Simulation department can be a challenge. Here is how I "Exceeded Expectation"...

There were numerous challenges, unique efforts and innovations compulsory to the successful implementation a new service like Urban Simulation –vs.- management of traditional Engineering Service:

I was hired and tasked from the beginning with the following Objectives & Challenges:

Objectives for new Urban Simulation Group:

    1. Urban simulation should become routinely part of our everyday design process for the engineering and planning groups. Just as we deliver plans, we should deliver the simulation. This needs to be marketed as a package, not as the design plans plus extra money for the simulation. This will require staff training and equipment, both in Plano and Dallas. As a second phase, this would spread to other Texas offices.
    2. This group should be doing the highest end, most sophisticated work in the State of Texas
      a. Particularly seek out projects that allow us to deliver these kinds of projects
      b. Particularly seek out venues to display this talent
    3. This group should be doing the highest end, most sophisticated work in (Company-X)
      a. Billable assignments from around the firm should come to Texas
      b. We aren't interested in routinely doing marketing pieces outside of Texas
    4. This group should be integrated in all (Company-X) -Texas projects, and should have clients of their own. This group should be instrumental in obtaining new clients for (Company-X) -Texas. Some of these may be non-traditional clients
    5. Be aggressive in partnering with other (Company-X) -Texas groups to market services as part of a team to win
    6. This group must be profitable
      a. 4x4 performance
      b. Time on jobs for the technology group as a whole equal to 75% overall
      c. No lost earnings
      d. Investments in personnel and equipment commensurate with market opportunity

This “start-up” stage of the department creation included constant challenges and the need to efficiently and most often autonomously overcome the following list of hurdles.

Challanges & Hurdles Overcome in 1st 18 months:

    1. A unique level of Hiring & Training
      i. I hired & trained 17 new personnel unfamiliar with the industries we serve over a 6 months period of time.
ii. A large number of these new hires were positioned simultaneously; during a time when only two employees (including myself) within the firm were familiar with the required department procedures and industry cliental.
iii. • This limited the attention certain administrative and high level items received
    2. I performed what I call "Smoke and Mirrors sales" during my first 10 month of employment in order to generate our initial client interest and sales.During this time it is important to understand we had:
      i. No portfolio
ii. No existing power points or brochures
iii. No existing customer testimoniesNone the less – over $800,000 in orders were placed prior to our facility being built.
    3. Created and defined the new Product line \ Billable Services which would serve our clients for years to come from scratch.
    4. Designed the staffs Workflow and the supporting technological infrastructure:
      i. Established basic workflow principals of all software toolsets and production task
ii. Implemented sub-division techniques allowing unlimited size outdoor virtual environments
iii. Thought a quality control method within our Pre, Post, and publishing services.
    5. Provided Architecture & Design of the physical working environment / facility
    6. IT task included – Ordering of all necessary equipment and software and media
      i. 3D Workstations – specified the new “standard” for 3D modeling hardware
ii. Software – designated full workflow tools set for every department procedure
iii. Post Production equipment – Editing \ Decks \ Sounds system \ Etc…
iv. Server storage – High-speed Fiber Channeled SANs solution.
    7. File storage conventions – Sub divided SANs solution into manageable areas
      i. Backup system for 3.5 terabytes (triple the rest of the office) Soon to be 9+ terabytes
ii. Network systems – High capacity gigabit switched local topology
iii. Cabling – Designed DVI integration to multiple workstation and Editing Bay
iv. Video Presentation – Centralized presentation opportunities within the production studio
      v. In field Data collection hardware \ Cameras, etc
vi. Blank DVDs, cases, Printable CD-ROMs, etc
    8. Design industry specific reporting tools and labor projection calendars
      i. Revision tracking on digital output \ frame sequences
ii. Fast turn around of labor intensive projects with staff members new to the industry
    9. Established Department Policies
      i. 3D Modeling conventions
ii. File storage \ organization principals & naming conventions
      iii. Quality control standards
    10. For each of the projects we performed industry specific quality control critiques -> custom development -> workflow maintenance (The department is one of a kind)
      i. Final results of production are often based on ours or our new client’s subjective opinions
ii. Technology in this field progresses aggressively each year
iii. Training of new techniques and refining of workflow is a constant necessity
    11. On demand adjustments to the business dynamics with all new staff members and technology solutions new to the company require numerous course corrections:
      i. I.e. -> Sales successes would occur -> Business reporting (labor Projections) reveals large amount of future TOJ -> Department must increase, personnel, local storage -> technical capabilities -> Post-production must adjust to avoid bottlenecking final output schedule.
ii. Constant Hand-offs and pro-active decisions to prepare for successful project completion were necessary as we incubated and grew the group.

Additional accomplishments made during the start-up process not identified above:

    • Required to pro-actively provide countless operations / facilities / Architecture and construction - design, accountability and direction on items such as; Plenum Exhaust Problems, Tack Light Locations and specs, Ballast Changes for other lights, Acoustic Foam ordering and positioning, Emergency Exit Light locations, Door installations and designs, Electronic Access & Security concerns, A/V cabling design and installation challenges, Shelving and Mill work issues, Furnishing orders - file cabinets, tables, etc., partition wall design and specification, projector specification, plus office supplies, etc…
    • Maintained chargeability during the last 6 months of 78.2% for my fast expanding group. This was a daunting challenge at times given the previously described operational issues and the fact our department is a brand new service offering for the firm.
    • Negotiated a partnership arrangement with Google \ Keyhole which provides all current Google-Earth Enterprise solutions free of charge to (Company-X) (minus the hardware) and provides preferred pricing for all of our clients on the enterprise solution and profit sharing for the individual seat licenses.
    • Coauthored a Technology opportunities Program Grant with the City of Dallas - The Grant described ways to use the latest Internet based technologies along with Real-time Simulation & GIS in an innovative and efficient manner to further economic development and eliminate some of the risks in development. This technology Grant Application described numerous advanced ways to assist in prototype planning efforts for large urban areas.

Below is an excerpt of my Performance Review conducted two weeks prior to leaving the company, by my supervising Manager, (Employee-X), Technology Manager - Texas

    Section IV – Management Assessment
These questions were considered by the "Technology Manager" upon receiving the completed section III (above) and mutually discussed at the employee-manager CPD meeting.

    Career Development
    A. Insights regarding skills and competencies that will help the employee attain career goals.
    1. Considering this employee’s career goals what do you perceive to be the most important areas for this individual’s development?
    a. Job/Technical Skills

Michael is the most experienced, simulation/visualization subject matter expert in the firm. His technical skills are more than adequate for his current position. (4000+ employees) He has developed management skills related to managing the operations of a growing business unit, communicating with management peers from other disciplines and upward communication of business strategies and vision.
    b. Personal Attributes (communication skills, leadership skills, etc.)
Michael appears to have the ability to convince other Sim professionals to buy into his vision and join his team. He is also very passionate about his technical discipline and the future of the discipline within the firm. He needs to place more of a priority on communicating more frequently with his management peers from other disciplines in order to prioritize business objectives.
    2. During the next 12 months, what activities can be introduced that will develop the employee’s abilities and competencies in these areas?
Michael needs to be included in more marketing initiatives for mega pursuits and the Texas business plan for 2006. We are working toward spinning Michael’s team into their own section in 2006 – this is an organizational move that I support. Michael also should be tasked with developing a marketing plan for his section for 2006. Michael has not had an opportunity to attend the (Company-X) PM and Marketing training. Express programs to need to be identified and followed up on as soon as possible.

    Job Performance
    B. Assessment of employee’s current job performance and achievement of past year’s smart goals.
    1. Considering the employee’s assessment of their performance outlined in Section III and your observations, document the results attained for each goal listed on the past year’s CPD. Specify if these results meet, exceed or fall short of expectations.
    Goal 1:
Michael’s primary goal was the development of the Urban Sim practice into a profitable, growing business unit in Texas. He Exceeded this goal.
    Goal 2:

    Goal 3:

    2. What do you perceive to be the employee’s key contributions to department or office success during the past year? How do these accomplishments impact the office or department business plan?
As stated in my previous Goal 1 assessment, Michael’s primary contribution was the development of the Urban Sim group. Michael accomplished exactly what we expected when he was brought onboard to establish our 3D practice.

    3. How might this individual further contribute to the organization’s success?
Michael’s next task will be to continue the development of the Urban Sim group from both an operations and technical standpoint. Retention of key staff and the continued development of junior staff will be key. Targeting new clients throughout Texas and the rest of the division will also be critical.

What I love about my field...

Every time we do an animation, we get to go to school…

Sometime it may be about something we know quite a bit about, or it maybe something we know nothing about.

In any event we are going to learn something not only about the subject we are illustrating but also about the trade we practice. Our skills and our knowledge never stop increasing, and the importance of our work often impacts 1000s of people and millions of dollars in tax payers or private developers money.

Corporate initiative I drafted for a large design firm in 2004...

I wrote this initiative in 2004 - never knowing the predicted outcome within its paragraphs would unfold as it did. Sometimes it is just best to not make predictions...
    ---------------
Our efforts must be presented and understood upon their introduction to our firm as an opportunity for numerous groups; a valuable technological resources and industry innovation. These innovations need to be understood up-front by as many of the top leaders within the firm as is realistically necessary in order to garnish a comprehensive, initial buy-in; and therefore, healthy continued, future support. In other words, first impressions are key and will set the course.

We do not want to spend the next three years convincing and teaching others internally, the importance of this service… While other firms create foundations with our clients, and gain vital reputations and technical capabilities that we fight to put in place.

The importance of captivating our clients, addicting them to our services, successfully pioneering new ideas in a way no other civil firm has managed to do with computer technology via the rich resources of today’s world; and therefore, delivering a level of service they can not be provided ANYWHERE else; is not something that can be dredged into existence. To further explain my position, I will tell you from experience; that ideas, as innovative as these, as state-of-the-art, and therefore far outside of even progressive engineers paradigms; are a perfect breading ground for skepticism, jealousy, and therefore, eventually, areas of complicated politics and unrealistic accountability; due to a lack of corporate cohesion & support.

Someone needs to explain how the exponential increases in technology are also an accurate measure of how far behind a firm is being left if they don’t embrace the extraordinary tools which are already being exploited by so many others. A simple convergence of the right technologies can yield results that propel us years ahead of the others. While ignoring these opportunities will yield the opposite affect. It is a very simple concept with very damaging results if not understood an acted upon.

The time is indeed now, the opportunity is at hand, the talents can be easily put in place, the equipment and needed payroll is within (Company-X) grasp thanks to healthy years of profitability and an incredible existing client base.

Let’s win this thing… I must be allowed to truly “bring my big ideas”… Thereby allowing (Company-X) to realistically orchestrate a “we’ll do the rest” capability, that everyone will be proud of. Together, as a team, with the support of the entire firm, (the whole firm is the “team”, not just a group from the Dallas office – that would be politics), immediate gratification and predicated national and international client recognition are realistic 2004 goals.

From within a small local firm I have previously competed, nationally, with just a taste of my technological innovations; even while lacking the support of the firm. To be able to expect the extraordinary results I anticipate wielding, we must approach the future as if we are a firm which can over come it's differences and high political walls. Proving that healthy collaboration and true vision are a real description of the characteristics which guide the future role we will provide to our clients.

A position, title, division or service set must be established that invites relationships with cities around the country; their Economic development boards; Planning and Zoning comities; and other impacted municipalities. Additionally relationships with non-profit organization such as the Council of governments around the states and others equivalent groups around the country. Collaborations with Universities, software vendors and state and federal agencies tasked with research and the progression of science and services supporting the industries (Company-X) serves.
