Striving for last! The U.S. Educational System Is Confidently Living In The Past!

A complete shame telecommuting for education (minus the telepresence robots) isn't taken more seriously in all areas of education. Would / could serve countless students wonderfully, who live far away from any respectable education opportunities.

Texas's curriculum and its' results now rank 40 out of 50! In a country which ranks 25th overall!!  Simple HORRIBLE and shameful!!

So why shouldn't a student who lives down in Mc Allen, Texas, be able to telecommute to a classroom in HPS (Highland Park), Dallas, Texas?  The simple answer, bureaucracy, misappropriations and pathetic leadership!

At the very least, any 21st century, private school should eagerly offer live broadcast and access to it's classrooms, for those enrollees wishing to attend from anywhere they might live. It is certainly an non-issue technologically to hold each student accountable for their attendance and participation.

The first company I started in the mid 90's, couldn't have existed without the connectivity the Internet provided to our California based software developers and hardware support. That was 18 YEARS AGO! How in the world do we expect our students to understand how small this world has become and how to productively utilize it's connectivity and resulting opportunities if our classrooms still function within a 1950's method of operation?!?

Our curriculum and methodologies as irrelevant and dated as our methods of delivery and dissemination. All this talk of "restoring America" is hog wash, as long as continued, failed, misappropriated and mismanaged methods continue to be the norm insofar as to the way we educate our students.

There is no future in an environment ranking at the BOTTOM of what counts!!  We now live in a world were consumerism is more defining as to the state-of-the-art than are our teachers.

This is why folks actually think items like the iPhone are the greatest innovation they have seen or been exposed to.  Such ignorance and naivety is embarrassing! It is pathetic, and it is fast (exponentially) defining our countries future and potential failure!

Avoiding such poor decision making is all any competing countries need do! The games and methods have changed! If we don't, we loose!

Continued Education Via The Internet

It is true, there are some things in life that just can't be measured.
Our intelligence is definitely a hard one to gauge.

"The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education" - Albert Einstein
Some folks are only inspired to accomplish something if others are able to recognize, pay tribute to, or monetarily compensate them for their accomplishment.  Other's find the drive, incentive and passion to create, produce and grow simply for the sake of the accomplishment itself and the edification which comes from creating something new; regardless of whether or not others are present or aware of the effort.

For those who enjoy learning, striving and improving one's knowledge and capacity, regardless of measured or shared recognition with others; the following websites are simply a treasure! You will find an ability though these resources to literally learn just about any physical science, chemistry, political science, history, health care, astronomy, architecture, languages, all levels of math, software training, grammar, physics, philosophy or practically any other area of academic learning you choose.

I have blogged about this first site on my list of links previously.  It represents an exceptional future in education, and is sure to become a resource used by schools and home student all around the world.
Great resource for all grades and levels of teaching and tutoring needs:
  • The Kahn Academy:  http://www.khanacademy.org/
    • Kahn has recently not only received multi-million dollar support and donations from Google's founders, but also the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation.
  • Lentil (alpha) "Get your learn on":  http://lentil.cc/
    • Lentil describes itself as, "a learning application. Like a wise tutor, it breaks things down and finds the right pace for you. If you ever have trouble, it's our fault, not yours."
    • While it only serves to teach Japanese, some Korean, and some Geography at the moment; it promises many more application are to come!
    • It was founded by Russel Simmons, a Yelp co-founded who has always wished to improve education through tehcnology.
  • (An Online Academy are integrated with the University of Kansas, "eLearning Design Lab")
Other exceptional resources sponsored directly by elite Universities and Colleges around the country:
For those seeking professional software tutorials, (which in some cases require a small fee) these are very helpful:
Other resources best at inspiring interest and informing us of exceptional areas of research, science, art and current social issues are as follows:
Ready to enter the hottest advancing market in technology, App Development?  Let the resources help get you there:
More general learning sites:
Need help with your research:
Need to translate an article, text or entire website:
Simply, instant news briefing / electronic news paper:
PRODUCE / CREATE:
I will continue updating this list of education related resources as I learn and use other sources over the coming years.
Enjoy!  ...happy (e)learning...

As for more physical / hardware tools to consider:
consider a writing instrument such as the PULSE SmartPen, which records ALL verbal lectures simultaneously while each written note is also digitized. This digital synchronization of both the audio present during a lecture or meeting along with your written dictation, allows you to later return to your writings and simply tap the desired note on the paper to instantly replay and hear it's related sound bite.  The more you get use to the power such instant recall and note embellishment provides the more you love it!
$150
Soon we will live in a world which better understands, self sufficient accountability, where related to the study habit and efficiency of every student; regardless of which level or area of studies they are facing.  Once this maturity and wisdom is more common, and something our culture embraces, teaches and expects then resources being made available all around the world will then be recognized for the revolutionary tools in learning and developing they represent.
"The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education" - Albert Einstein

Schools, libraries, colleges & university use to be the exclusive resources (beyond that of internship and apprenticeships) we had to depend on for higher education and continued education.  However, such brick and mortar, costly, institutions are simply no longer required.

Society has not yet caught up with these existing, new opportunities, the information age has now brought instantly to our fingertips, ears and eyes.  And there may not yet be an award system or  measurable way to account for the regular attendance or results each attendee visiting these resources garners; regardless, they are no less capable of complimenting and in most cases replacing our current aging system of education in this country.

The Irony of Conformity Amongst "Creatives"

I do often wonder if many Apple fan boys within the "creative" fields, have ever bothered to examine the irony of their own conformity?  ..."conformity" is not a very "creative" trait after all.

After-all, where related to technological tool-sets, "creatives" typically share in uniformly seeking the same monochromatic, minimalism, computing platform. (Mistaking, if you will, minimalism for high-tech.) An unfortunate misinterpretation; given Apple is a computing platform which draws those same professionals towards a set of tools which are actually so technically limiting; in either their offering as a PC, or robust computing platform. ...and let's not even try to approach the Apple's recent (2010) abandonment of its' X-serve enterprise line of computers. Indicating, even Apple concedes the shallow nature of it's platform and opportunities outside of consumer, versus professional customers.

In keeping with product lines, devoid of "professional" / mission critical, profit based, computing intentions; rumors are they will soon abandon their Mac Pro desktop computing line as well. Eliminating their only remaining; flexible, up-gradable, high-end system offering. This combined with the fact they have recently alienated themselves from Adobe; the only real application developer of professional / industry standard, Page Publishing (In Desgn) , Photo Editing (Photoshop), Web Authoring (Dream Weaver) and reliable video editing tools (Premier) their platform supports, (not even going to mention Flash) is just embarrassing and completely destructive for all those "Creatives" who continue to depend on them. (And my hat is off to all those fellow NLE's who have had experienced the nightmare of using both the previous "Pro" version, and the now downgraded Final Cut, over the years!) Not to mention the fact there has NEVER been an adequate "industry standard" application developer in the (CAD) Computer Aided Design field, (and very few within the field of Computer Animation tool-sets) which has ever wished to risk development resources on supporting the Macintosh product line. The only exception are typically those which already had a presence in the UNIX landscape so for a few years supporting a directly ported version for OSX.

Being a "creative", should never mean turning a blind eye to the most productive and liberating tool sets. But it is often hard to get a "creative" to turn their eyes of the obsessions they have already chosen to desirably gaze at! Passion! Can't live with it, can't live without it. In these cases, a plea or question should be asked. "Since when do "creatives" wish to be limited? ...or for that matter conformist?" Was never a goal of mine while steeped within the Computer Graphics, Design and Simulation field...

I can however appreciate the fact that many "creatives" are not necessarily striving to be "computer nerds"; therefor, seeking what may seem to be the "path of least resistance", to this end. And I might try to be sensitive to those who feel the safest route to avoid becoming technically adept; is to harbor a platform based on "closed architecture" and a highly restrictive ecosystems; since such limits might initially offer the desired solace or comfort.

It just seems that ultimately depending on appropriate provisions such as of self proclaimed, "Awesome", IT folks, (or perhaps, 3rd part, outside consultants,) in an inspired and productive effort to avoid stifling platform limitations, the perils of discontinued support and whole product lines, and the stagnation of "comfort zones" (aka paradigms); and instead support or introduce platforms and tools which actually provide the most depth, security and freedom. Such liberation and better values, should actually be the smartest long term route within any organization or studio. But as is always the case, folks just don't know, what they don't know.

Creativity and Intelligent within larger organization is already fraught with so many challenges; it is certainly not a good choice to have those individuals whom are "avoiding being computer nerds" to indeed have the final say, belief or influence on the computing platform they chose to find comfort in.

If creatives are thinking by avoiding the wiser choice 90% of all computer users see fit to depend on, they are avoiding being "typical" or conformist; I'm afraid by instead conforming to their other "creative" peers (or all of those visible within their immediate circles;) in this case, they have shot themselves in the foot.  This wouldn't be such an irony and challenge if it wasn't so likely to stifle future creativity.

Here are some odd perspective on a couple of emerging technologies I shared through a blog entry last December, that I have yet to see shake up the industry, as I hope they one day will: http://themichaelhulmeproject.blogspot.com/2010/12/onlive-came-clean-and-future-looks.html

Perhaps even CITRIX recent announcement today claiming, "it will make virtual desktops cheaper than real ones", is also a step in this direction of remote computing, based on platforms even the "creatives" among us can't be stifled by.
http://arstechnica.com/business/news/2011/10/citrix-details-integration-of-acquired-vendors-prepares-vdi-ready-chips.ars

And some rather unrelated news of Apple' "green" efforts, which I am a fan of:

Is it up to a "Slick Willy" Politician to save our kids?

An unlikely candidate:
Texas currently ranks 51! LAST - even including D.C. in terms of handing out HS diplomas to those enrolled in our public schools. and 45! - 6 from the bottom in terms of the results our students who do receive diplomas are taking away! SHAMEFUL!

Certainly seems rather unlikely that a man who has been in office for a decade accomplishing as little as he has to shape up anything in this state where related to our school systems, would have a very intelligent take on reforming education in Texas, or anywhere for that matter. Instead, I'm more likely to believe politics is just that; and our kids are secondary to any politicians career goals and unmentioned agendas. Not to mention his points about competitiveness in a capitalistic, free-market society, obviously have little bearing on where Texas has ever ranked in education.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7hgCntt6zI&feature=player_embedded#at=149

Testimonies -VS- Titillation:
Like I always say - it is much better to follow our own testimonies (when evaluating the truth of this typical political rhetoric,) rather than be enthralled by titillation and slick speeches. This advice is especially important when partisan motivations are at hand; such as when a Governor is one party and the individuals plan he is speaking against is being spearheaded by another party. Isn't disagreeing a given in this case, whether or not it is good for our country, state or our children? I wouldn't trust this Governors position on this any further than I can throw him. His results and "reputation" he seems so found of, are what speaks for his ability to assess this topic and be trusted as an authority here.

"Catering to Diversity":
So he doesn't want a "one size fits all" mentality to education in this country. He feels Texas will do a better job independently determining the best education reform and path. Has this been something that our state government has EVER proven it could handle, innovation, disseminate and get results with it's own version of "education reform". After all, we are now simply scrambling to overhaul and reform our own last pathetic reform efforts. Those are after all the same attempts and ignorant movements which have our state pathetically ranked and positioned right were it remains.
  • http://www.texastribune.org/texas-education/public-education/why-does-texas-rank-last-in-high-school-diplomas/: "the real demographic shift will come when today’s second- and third-graders — who are Hispanic and low-income in higher percentages than today’s Texas teenagers — get into high school. In 2008, the Hispanic population represented 36 percent of all Texans, but 46 percent of births, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. The latest enrollment report from the Texas Education Agency, from the 2008-09 school year, shows that Hispanic students now account for 48 percent of public school enrollment — and 65 percent of pre-kindergarten enrollment."
Can't possibly imagine how his "catering to diversity" stance, nor customizing the school system accordingly; whatever that means?; will help us gain any ground in education and the global workforce and economy we are competing with. Since Mexico is not the country who's competition we are concerned with nor wishing to model.

When will he propose a solution -VS- objections:
Would sure love to hear him suggest actual solutions to the mess he has our state in though. Speak directly (rather than politically) at the actually issues effecting our State's finances and VERY dated method of educating! In the ten years he has been in charge what has he learned, and what is being applied? You would think he could go on and on with some sort of intelligence in this matter more directly / specifically.

Certainly, no time to be a party of "No"! It is time to actually use all of his wise experience in office (if I am to believe that is what he has,) and actually apply it to ANY real solutions!

3 videos which inspire a new outlook on solving our U.S. education epidemic!

Want to be versed in better possibilities and a better future for your children's education? Take the 45 minutes required to view this set of multimedia information in order to gain a broad insight into the predictable problems and some game changing, amazing solutions.

Our future has a good chance of improving if we take the time required to become an educated democracy. This improvement must start with the vast amount of adult voters improving their own education as to how we arrived at this treacherous state in our countries history.

1.) Learn about the history of how our "modern" educational system started, and some insight on why it has run a muck. (12 Minutes)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDZFcDGpL4U

2.) Learn about the future of our education when it itself is taught how to embrace and use current technology. (20 Minutes)
 http://youtu.be/nTFEUsudhfs

3.) Consider a warning from one of the riches men in the world; explaining, the a 3-5 year projection; if state and local school budgets remain operating the way they do, will make college educations "unaffordable". (11 Minutes)
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiUKpX09zo4

You may want to join some of the organizations which are already initiating these changes and allowing you to participate in "The Future" or education today!

Now that you have a taste (bad or good) of how we arrived at this point; and perhaps how things should be done, as well as why most institutions seem so completely antiquated and unaccountable; what will you do to influence and guide the future of education within your community, your state, your country? Sitting on the sideline will sideline this country's potential and your children's ability to function or even compete within a global market.

Our Duties and Responsibilities in Education

If we lead with contradictions we miss-lead. We must speak, act and vote from a perspective of each of our own individual testimony's; guided by the core desire to improve life for all Americans. When it comes to educating and raising our children, being influenced by the contradictory manipulations of a political campaigning machine; built to sway groups of voting lemmings; can not enter in to the sensibilities required to update an aging and failing education system which has not significantly changed it's method of educating in over 50 years.

A friend of mine, whom I respect a great deal, recently announced he was running for a position within his local school board.
"By state legislative enactment, local school boards are delegated power and authority to develop policies, rules, and regulations to control the operation of the schools, including system organization, school site location, school finance, equipment purchase, staffing, attendance, curriculum, extracurricular activities, and other functions essential to the day-to-day operation of schools within the district's boundaries. Boards may also be authorized by the state legislature to levy taxes, invest resources, initiate eminent domain proceedings, acquire land, and assume bonded indebtedness." - education.com
Duties and Responsibilities ( http://www.education.com/reference/article/school-boards-duties-responsibilities-decision/?page=2 )
"In most states, it is the local board that is fully charged with the responsibility to establish and maintain a basic organizational structure for the local school system, develop curriculum, meet federal and state mandates for public schools, appoint a superintendent and key members of the central office staff, adopt an annual budget, and create a climate that promotes educational excellence. Consequently, school boards initiate educational policies at the local level and have a responsibility for implementing a variety of state and federal policies. These boards provide important administrative oversight relative to the educational policies and programs they institute; play a central role in establishing systems and processes to ensure the school system's fiscal, programmatic, and outcome accountability; and undertake broad human resource functions that include making crucial decisions regarding the district's top-level leadership and key staff. Finally, school boards provide leadership for the local school system, adopting a unifying vision and mission, soliciting and balancing the participation and input of members of the community, and advocating on behalf of the educational needs of children at the local, state, and national levels."
Impacting the future of education in this state and around the country is an incredibly difficult challenge, one that is hard to even find a starting point for.
"A host of contemporary concerns present challenges to the local school board's pivotal role in the governance structure in American public education. These challenges include declining public confidence in public schools; limited financial and operational support; changing demographics; perceived drops in student achievement and performance; persistent student attrition or dropouts; reports of crime and violence in the school setting; and adversarial relationships with employee groups." - education.com
I am frustrated by the notion that running for a position on any school board in this state or country is unlikely to yield on opportunity which it is "all about the kids". It is after all an elected position on a large governing body. Therefore, it is very similar to those groups many of us have seen within even large religious organizations. As most of us have inevitable witnessed, they often seem to be less about God and more about the elevation of man's ego.

There are over 7,000 elected school board members in Texas. Out of a total of 1,068 school boards in Texas, 1,062 boards are members of TASB.

Given all the current budget short falls which are being published around the state, the latest slogan every school board is expected to follow is, "Do more with less". Reminds me of a similar slogan NASA adopted years ago in the face of it's federal budget cuts, "Faster, cheaper, Smarter". In their case they truly acted and made the most of this new set of philosophies, yielding some of the most compelling and effective space and research missions their field had ever scene.
"Given the variety of policy considerations for school boards, the decision-making process of the board will vary depending upon the issues addressed, the parties involved, and the organizational interests, operational procedures, time constraints, and personal values of the decision makers. School boards are political organizations with members elected to serve a broad constituency. Decision-making in this environment is a highly political process in which coalition building, bargaining, competition, and adaptation are common." - education.com
Any elected forum at the helm of large institutions often tends to eventually serve the egos of those who council from it. Assuming this natural human tendency of serving one's own ego could be avoided; and each vote cast by individual board members was able to avoid posturing, hidden agendas, stagnant thinking, or any stubbornness brought on by those really just trying to protect their current position, here are many of the approaches and resources I would encourage anyone entering any such opportunity or position to consider.
"As with most organizations, it cannot be assumed that school board members are unified actors, and studies of school board decision-making show that individual role interests and social roles often serve as analytical constructs to explain decision-making processes. Local boards typically consist of members who possess divergent individual agendas and a limited set of mutually shared values or beliefs. Nevertheless, existing school board policies, extant procedures, and regularized customs and practices create and then enforce a unifying culture within the school board that is designed to maintain the status quo and has a relatively conservative perspective." - education.com
Align with the most empowered greatest thinkers in American education.

Adopt their guiding principals:
Study the values presented within well researched organizations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. (They summarize many key principals within the "College Ready education plan".)
Go to page 6 of their education plan to read key bullets on:
Focus on success at a higher level
Empower excellent teachers
Innovate to support and engage students

Follow the wisdom and consider membership in renowned organizations:
Students First .ORG http://www.studentsfirst.org/
Kahn Academy .ORG http://www.khanacademy.org/

Learn as much as possible about the technologies at our disposal today - and how cheaply and easily they can be implemented:
http://themichaelhulmeproject.blogspot.com/2008/11/where-or-when-will-your-kids-go-to.html
"The work of board members is seldom self-selected and is more likely to be defined for them by the superintendent, other professional educators, community leaders, interest groups, or state and federal actors. Despite the importance of policy making, board members report that day-to-day responsibilities consume most of their time and complain that they seldom have time for reflection, brainstorming, and long-term planning. Despite concerns for educational equity and quality, boards more often address matters of financial accountability, which tends to enforce a role as steward of the public purse and a perspective of fiscal conservatism." - education.com
When people tell you "no" find out "why". Teach them "yes" and explain "how".

Always keep in mind that the brain and body requires healthy food, nutrition and exercise. Therefor our system of socialized education will fail without it:
http://themichaelhulmeproject.blogspot.com/2010/02/our-childrens-health-is-to-important.html
http://www.jamieoliver.com/foundation/jamies-food-revolution/
http://www.jamieoliver.com/us/foundation/jamies-food-revolution/school-food

Any decent education in this world must depend on the latest tools. And the greatest tool available to us in this day and age is information. However our current education system was formulated during an industrial revolution not an information revolution. Therefor the concentration on memorization and fact finding versus comprehension, execution and implementation has got to change.
"Models of decision-making emphasize inventing, developing, and analyzing possible solutions before selecting a particular course of action. Selecting a possible course of action is informed by the judgment of the decision maker, the analyses of the alternatives on a logical or systematic basis, and the political bargaining process. A major criticism of decision-making in the context of local school boards is that adequate alternative solutions are not always considered in the decision-making process prior to drafting policies." - education.com
On a very personal and potentially touchy political note: I tend to think most people actively involved in careers supported by or in support of the American education system, should reconsider any positions which are outspoken about claims towards anti-socialism; since it would indeed be chatter of utter hypocrisy. Our entire education system is in fact a socialized response to not only educating our children, but in many cases raising them. In other words; a person's mere involvement or dependency for income through such institutions, is directly demonstrating support for one of our countries most crucial and blatant dependencies on "socialism". (At least as it is defined and criticized within the realm of manipulative political rhetoric.)

An early lessons all of our children should understand is their actions speak even louder than their words. Let's not pretend to be polarized by politicized rhetoric while openly depending on social systems and political machines to administer and guide the most important parental and educational areas of American living.

Avoid loosing yourself!

Beyond folks who have children and possibly those who are leaders or managers of people and groups, there are two groups of people I think should watch this speech: Those who are teachers; and those who are not teachers... In other words this speech holds inspiration and considerations which effect us all! ...enjoy! And for all of our sakes, if you were raised to possess and treasure a "closed mind", try to open it back up, if even for a day! Who knows, you might learn something or at least encourage someone else to...

I would now encourage you to go live a life without the regret that all you did was encourage others to believe like you did and understand the things you could comprehend. Instead be proud that you encouraged others to be smarter than you and wiser about decision and chose to avoid resolutions which only reflected the knowledge, experience and wisdom you possessed yesterday or decades before.

Find a way to grow, even when your old. (and I don't mean by gaining weight.) Find a way to accept others, even when your are confortable with yourself. Find a way to assist and be productive, even when you are retired. Find a way to avoid pride, even when you feel sure. Find a way to embrace humility, even when you are accomplished. If you find these things, then you just might avoid loosing yourself.

So go a few of the thoughts this speech inspired me to consider on this exciting Saturday morning. It's exciting because the world is still spinning, and the lungs are still working. Go enjoy it...

Our children's health is too important & Rupert Murdoch has enough cash!

A friend of mine recently left the following quote and information about a recent Hannity broadcast on my home page. (Unfortunately, I couldn't find any transcripts or online broadcast of this particular recent show via any of the typical Hannity's resources, if you know where I can read more about my friends context please let me know?)

"What blew my mind yesterday was Hannity going off on Michelle Obama about her new healthier lifestyle agenda for kids. It seems they are going to start enforcing healthier meals at schools and making set times for kids to engage in physical activity. Hannity was blowing a gasket that this was just one more inch that the government was gaining on a full take over and we can't let it happen.

Then he said parents know how to be healthy, kids know they shouldnt drink ten sodas. It's not the governments place. And all I could think was, "But they do it anyways! And we have some of the fattest (if not the fattest) kids in the world here! I'm all for the government stepping in and making people eat healthier food and step away from their sedentary lifestyles!" Ugh.."

Sounds like the Hannity's critique also fails to sensibly examine any of the facts involving the school menus' largest nutritional blows, due to the ridiculous, outdated government subsidies (for corn, etc.) established decades ago. While necessary at the time to support the dying and now dead breed of mom and pop farming, it's time has come when our children are now paying the price.

Hopefully with the First Lady's attention focused on the matter, effective changes and updates can finally be made which truly improve the school program's nutrition and consequential priorities effecting our children's health and future.
View the First Lady's duscussion with Larry King on the Topic here: http://youtu.be/ZMU-6HU1tvs

Can you imagine being a person responsible for a show or programing that flies in the face of any consideration for the actual wellbeing and productive future of this country. All in the name of your bloated salary. Truly shameful!

Baffles the mind how there are actual markets for repeat viewership, feeding this destructive frenzy of reckless moronic criticisms! A trend I wish our society had the wisdom to avoid, but it isn't looking good...

I guess we are all either part of the solution or part of the problem. (Pot "S" or Pot "P" - I call it) We each vote with the shows and positions we chose to support... Hannity and other, ignorant, vanity based, profiteering, blow-heart commentary like his are definitely Part of the Problem in my book! Our country doesn't have the luxury of the time necessary to feed the egos and pockets of men or networks like that. Rupert Murdoch has enough cash, time for all of us to lesson his impact in our lives, for the sake of all of our futures...

For information on school lunches and nutrition from a person who actually knows what they are talking about; specifically in the area of School Lunches and our children's health, view this presentation from Ann Cooper originally shown at TED.ORG.
Nice testimony of a private school managing to adopt an effective and healthy change in the daily diet of their students for only $3 per day per student.
Viewer Question about School lunch budgets: Michelle Obama on Larry King, - She has introduced a recognition program. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YWITNoezU8

I certainly hope the First Lady's inspiration and influence is an initiative which might actually inspire the reformation of this catastrophic area of American life; one which is so evidently influenced and corrupted by greed and corporate influences; as she is also a mother of two, grade school age children.

We must all do our part to encourage the dismantling of a corrupted system which now predicates this deadly school lunch program.

Where or when will your kids go to school? 1950 or 2015

It is now understood we are using a school system designed in the 50's to educate our kids born in the 21st century. Unfortunately, this reality doesn't sound like a very forward thinking proposition for the wealthiest country on the world...

Let's look for a moment at the latest tools which should presumably be the types of technologies tomorrow's students will find useful.

First consider a writing instrument such as the PULSE SmartPen, that record all verbal lectures while each note is taken. Then allows you to simply tap the note on the paper, to replay and hear the related sound bite.
$150
(This pen also saves all your recorded notes too your computer; converts them to searchable text if your wish; and places them on the Internet for sharing if desired. -Click Here- for example notes.)

Now how about an exceptional, portable system for storing and viewing all text books; such as, the iLiad by iRex Technologies; which scores big by providing a touch screen over its' eInk screen creating a very effective ePaper! This allows for very convenient highlighting, bookmarking, annotating and instant text searching.
$500
Some models also provide wireless Internet connectivity.

Now all that's needed is an inexpensive home based or portable computer to plug these devices into and utilize for heavy typing and easy Internet based research and reporting. Doesn't have to be too fancy, and thanks to all the free software available via Google Apps, we really don't need to buy much in the way of software tools. ASUSTek sales just such a machine. The Eee PC 1000 (h)
$350
Okay, now that the students of the future each have all the devices they require; for around $1000!
**Recognizing it is odd that the eBook cost almost as much as the PC. However, these eInk based devices should drastically come down as their popularity increases and novelty wears off. There are several good eInk based eBook options in the $300-$400 rang but they don't have a touch screen.

Let's first consider the (simplified,) primary $$ cost of today's educational system:
  • Facilities - Building and classrooms
  • Staff - Teachers, Administrators, Support Staff - janitorial, security, custodian, lawn care, cooks, etc...
  • Materials - Books, Furnishings, Supplies
  • Technology - Computers, Video Projection Systems, Software, networking
  • Food, and Utilities - Electricity, phone, water, sewage, Internet service provider, etc...
Now lets briefly list the obvious pro and cons of a solution such as homeschooling:

PROS:
  • Avoiding all infrastructure cost and inefficiencies listed above to maintain the public schools
  • A potential for self-paced progression for each student. Move ahead in accordance to your abilities versus simply your age.
CONS:
  • Depending on the age of the student, a Parent, guardian or instructor must be present at all times.
  • Maintaining good accountability of work completion and performance is hard to regulate or enforce.
  • Some lower income families are dependent on the school system for reliable food and shelter during the work week.

So what is the actual cost of today's educational system system?
What standards could actually be enforced?
Are "Gadgets" and new technologies enough?

  • Recoding all hand written notes, synchronized with audio of online lecture.
  • eBooks with reported confirmations of read text
  • Study materials with recorded and reported highlighting

Can the Internet be utilized to provide a reliable homeschooling infrastructure?
  • Curriculum accountability through uploaded work and study preparations
  • Online live video lecturing with remote student interaction
How can these possibilities and solutions like them not all be weighed as a viable part of an extremely deteriorating educational system, and a goal to excel as a world leader in modern innovations and opportunities.
